CLASSROOM AUTOMATION FOR THE 21ST CENTURY • HARRISBURG, PA Harrisburg School District partnered with Harrisburg University, embarking on a journey to propel both their students and the community into the 21st century. The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology High School, also known as SciTech High, was born out of that vision. SciTech High promotes student success through learning experiences that ancipate the future. To prepare students for the workforce, the high school aligns its efforts in support of learning, research, innovation and diversity. Teachers and students weave their pride in learning and celebration of academic success into the fabric of the school. As part of an enduring commitment to providing students with the skills and knowledge to succeed in an increasingly technological world, the district contracted SAGE Technology Solutions. SAGE equipped classrooms and faculty with the best teaching tools available. For good reason, SciTech's opening curried a great deal of publicity and excitement.
The SciTech High School project needed instruction enhancement without gross impediment: many systems integrators fail to consider the end user, designing solutions too cumbersome to operate. SAGE took great efforts to train SciTech faculty and staff properly, employing new technologies from leading industry manufacturers to automate and simplify classroom tasks. To allow for total portable classroom control, SAGE incorporated TeamBoard T-Interactive whiteboards and Crestron wireless touchscreen controllers. The TeamBoard screens let each instructor call up documents from his or her own laptop, annotate them, and save notes for student distribution and review. As they move around the classroom and interact with students, teachers can use their touchpanels to manage these devices.
The new system allows all audio and video in the newly renovated classrooms and the Information Commons to be controlled from a wireless touchpanel. All necessary controls, such as volume and source selection, are performed through an easy-to-use touchscreen that instructors carry with them. Evidence presentation is critical to court proceedings. It is imperative that jury members are able to examine electronic evidence as closely as possible. The LCD panels in the jury boxes are specifically configured to allow for the best possible viewing. All electronic evidence displays are controlled entirely by the judge. In turn, he can entrust A/V system control to the court clerk, allowing himself to devote his undivided attention to the proceedings.
Very shortly before the August 2005 Convocation, SciTech awarded SAGE the installation contract. SAGE utilized every available resource to install, test, and train staff on the systems before the faculty arrived for the first day of school. SAGE Systems Sales Engineer Steve Berg and Systems Specialist Andrea Neale performed alongside technicians and customer service representatives. Despite the scale of the undertaking, SAGE remained on-task, finishing in time to demonstrate the systems to WGAL News 8's Barbara Barr. SAGE Technology Solutions partnered with Harrisburg University as exclusive sponsors of the First Annual Honorary Alumni Association Celebration, held on Wednesday, January 25, 2006. The event, hosted by Mayor Stephen Reed, the first Honorary Alumnus and Honorary Chair, was attended by over 100 Harrisburg professionals that donated to the University and became Honorary Alumni themselves. The event raised over $100,000 for need-based student scholarships. The University focuses on underrepresented populations, and includes 70% minority students. Virtually all students at the University qualify for some form of financial aid, and SAGE is proud to have had the privilege of sponsoring such an event. SAGE is proud to partner with this great institution. SAGE will continue to work with the IT and Development Offices to showcase the University and the advanced tools that they chose to supply to their faculty. Through fundraising event sponsorships and on-going technical support, SAGE will be there every step of the way.
